Insuring Your Classic Car

Car manufacturers are forever inventing new gadgets and gismos to go on the latest cars, however, an increasing number of drivers are following through on their childhood dreams and purchasing classic cars.

The Car of Your Dreams

Once you’ve bought the classic car that you always wanted you don’t just want to to stand and admire it, you want to get it out on the road. So whilst finding and buying a vintage car is the first step to fulfilling your dream, getting it insured is just as important.

The good news is that if you know what to look for and where to look then classic car insurance should be cheaper than modern vehicle insurance. This is due to the fact that old cars are usually driven for fewer miles every year and are better cared for.

Below are 6 tips on how to save on your classic car insurance premiums:

  1. Agree a valuation - A classic car that has been in an accident needs to be properly insured for the value you want. The insurance company may have a completely different view to what the car's worth to you, and you could therefore be left out of pocket. If you have a guaranteed agreed valuation then you won't lose money.

  2. Limited Mileage – The chances are you are only going to take your classic car out only at weekends so a great way to save money on your insurance is to consider a 'limited mileage' policy on your classic car which will help cap your premiums.

  3. Advanced Driving – As a classic car owner you are likely to be a driving enthusiast. If you haven’t already, consider completing an advanced driving course such as the Pass Plus as it could earn a discount from your insurer.

  4. Owners' Clubs - Consider joining a club with fellow car enthusiasts and you could be rewarded for taking extra special care of your car; if a car insurance company knows you're going to be looking after your car properly then you're bound to save money on insurance.

  5. Increase Excess - As with all insurance policies, if you increase your excess (contribution towards a claim) then you will lower your premiums. However, beware not to set it to a level you can't afford.

  6. Storage – Most classic car owners will take more care over their car than the average car owner and most will to store their vintage car in a garage or enclosed trailer which will save a lot on your insurance.

In addition to these tips, the normal rules of getting cheaper insurance apply. Shopping around and knowing how motor insurance works will stand you in good stead so make sure you do some research online before you commit yourself to a quote. So good luck and happy motoring!

How to Choose a Car Transport Company

Author: Thomas Morva

Whether you're shipping an expensive exotic car, a classic, an antique or a standard family car you can always count on successfully locating an excellent car transport company with an auto carrier package designed to fit your needs and budget.

There are several different types of car transport companies that cover a wide range of services including overseas shipping and international transport, transport of custom built automobiles, luxury cars, antique autos, exotic cars, and the familiar sedan. Car transport companies are usually listed under the following titles: car transport, vehicle shipping, and auto transport. When hiring a car transport company you have to consider some issues specific to vehicle transport, unlike your other possessions cars have some precise requirements like additional car insurance and vehicle inspection reports.

Be confident that the car transport company adequately insures your car. When investigating car transport companies you will want to find out the total cost first. Be prepared to provide the following information: origination/destination, departure date, and type of car. You will also want to consider what kind of car transport service you want. There are several options available with a wide variety of prices; for example door-to-door car transport, terminal-to-terminal, enclosed car transport, car carrier transport and rail service.

Some car transport companies may require payment in advance, while others will require a deposit. Ask for a contract clause that waives the cancellation fee if your car is not picked up by your auto shipping company within the time frame that you agree upon. If you terminate your contract within the allotted time period, expect to pay some fee. Occasionally it is difficult for a car transport company to certify a delivery date, however some car transport companies will offer a guarantee that covers a rental car if they cannot make the agreed delivery, find out the cost and the maximum dollars per day covered.

Tips for storing a classic car.

First and foremost, imagine you are getting your Classic Car ready for a show. Preparation will avoid many a sore head when you take the car back out of storage.

  • Ensure that the boot is clean and dry, The boot seal is rarely perfect and some moisture can collect and condense in the inner wheel arches and floor. Air it out well for a day or so, then place a desiccant sac (you know the silicon gel packs you get in boxes with say, a power drill or a television) in here before closing it up.

  • Change the engine oil. Dirty oil is contaminated with acids and water that can cause premature bearing failure and rust inside the engine.

  • Make sure the Brake and Clutch master cylinders are full of brake fluid. Brake fluid can absorb water very quickly. By reducing the exposed surface area of the fluid, the water absorption can be reduced. If you can, bleed the brake and clutch systems.

Tips to avoid Auction Scams

Scammers only need to get ONE person each week anywhere in the world taking up their scam to make a very lucrative business for them.

Scams are all to frequent on the Internet these days, whether it is from an auction site such as ebay or an email sent to someone advertising a classic car for sale anywhere else. But there are ways of avoiding these scams whether you are buying or selling a classic car online.

Some of the most obvious things in emails are very very bad grammar and/or spelling. Most Nigerian email scams look as if they have been run through a language translation website "goog day to you I bring you good news, of intrest to me is your most excelent vehicle which was seen for advertised on the internet at your most wunderful website" is an example of one email I received.

Beware of any sellers that offer to ship the car to you and if you don't like it just send it back! Or the ones who offer to ship it for free. And never, ever give your address to someone who says they will deliver the car to your door for a nominal fee of something ridiculous like £1.

A few points to remember:
The chances are good you are being scammed when ..
