The Cougar Club of America began in the Spring of 1980
with an idea from Cougar owner Tom Jacobellis while recovering from a back
injury. Tom determined that there were clubs available for Mustangs, Camaros
and others but not yet for Mercury Cougars. Owning, at that time, three
Cougars, he felt he should do something about it. With the help of fellow
Cougar owner, Mark Strand, the Cougar Club of America began.
The idea then as now, was for the preservation and appreciation
of 1967-1973 Mercury Cougars. Single page, Xerox copied information sheets
were sent out to anyone who sent in a SASE. Each applicant was given a
Roster number and several from this original roster make up the membership
today.
Although our knowledge and information is biased toward
1967-1973 Cougars, appreciation of the marque is more important than ownership
of one of the earlier cars: Many members have later model Cougars, some
in addition to earlier models, some not.
Our membership ranks have risen slowly to around the 1000
mark worldwide. The bulk of this membership is USA and Canada based although
we do have a dedicated European membership and a recently formed Australian
Chapter.
There are 2 National events organised in the USA each
year; one West Coast, one East Coast and we try to hold a UK meet.
Our membership fees are:-
$25:00 US for US Nationals and
$30:00 US for the rest of the World.
For that members can expect 4-copies of our newsletter, At The Sign Of
The Cat, each year and the support of their Regional Director. These are
voluntary posts and a SASE is appreciated.
Our photograph shows a 1968 Mercury
Cougar GTE, which our GTE register is currently searching for. Help in
finding this car would also be appreciated.
