Most mainstream insurers detest classic cars - they are rare, much more expensive and tracking down the parts for a repair not only comes at a price but takes a considerable amount of time.

Little wonder then that many insurers will either refuse to cover cars over a certain age or instead charge exorbitant rates for the most basic of policies.

For these reasons, it is usually recommended for owners of vintage cars to find a specialist insurer who won`t charge the earth and still provides good cover.

The vast majority of classic cars are not used as an everyday vehicle but brought out of the garage on special occasions. This low useage and `second car status` is recognised by specialist car insurers and this, coupled with the fact that nearly every classic car owner is fanatical about taking care of his vehicle, helps to drive down the cost of the premium.

However, no matter how important the cost is, there are a number of other factors which separate classic car insurance from mainstream policies.

As a general rule, if an accident occurs, the insurer pays out the valuation of the car, with newer cars generally costing more. Of course, with classic cars the opposite is true and this can cause difficulties with insurers who don`t have a claims team with the sufficient knowledge to value vintage vehicles.

Classic cars appreciate at a different rate to everyday motors and this can cause disputes in the event that a valuation is required. In addition, one of the most important features for many classic car owners is that the vehicle is fitted with original parts, a very different approach than that usually taken by insurers looking to repair damage.

As well as lacking specialist knowledge to accurately value a classic car, mainstream insurers will often refuse to provide cover other than just the basic requirements. For example, goods held inside a vehicle with a soft top will usually be excluded and breakdown cover will not be entertained. Windscreen services, sometimes given away as a free benefit of insurance, are also likely to not be provided for classic cars.

Fortunately for classic car drivers, all of the above can be obtained from a specialist insurer but they may have certain conditions which must be met for the policy to be provided.

Although it is possible to agree the guaranteed value of the car that will be paid out in the event of a claim, the amount is decided by the insurer, it cannot be solely stipulated by the owner. Some insurers will not offer classic car insurance unless the vehicle is stored in a locked garage with restricted access. It can also be difficult to get young drivers insured on a classic car policy and souping up or refitting the car in any way so it can take part in rallies is banned.

The combined benefits of classic car insurance plus the cheaper premium mean that opting for a mainstream insurer makes little sense. For those who still find the cost of insurance difficult to afford, most companies accept payment on plastic, so using your Tesco credit card is one way to fund your hobby.

If you`re looking to buy a classic car the main aspect to keep in mind is that you need to spread your net much further than you would for a standard vehicle purchase. There are more options to consider and you should also be prepared to travel some distance to get the car that you really want.

Of course, you can find classic cars for sale alongside private vehicles and the traditional methods of selling shouldn`t be dismissed. It may be much harder to find a true classic advertised in your local paper or on a second hand dealer`s forecourt but you should still be prepared to look as you may find a bargain.

Elsewhere, for the greatest selection of classic cars for sale, it pays to look in a dedicated trade publication. There is a sales periodical that concentrates solely on classic cars and this is one of the best places to begin when you`re looking to make a purchase. Alternatively, any of the glossy magazines that are devoted to the history of classic cars will have sales pages to the back. Pick them up from your local newsagents and take a look. You`ll find one of the widest selections of classics for sale and you`ll have plenty to read at the same time.

There are also online versions of these publications where you can browse through a selection of classic vehicles at your leisure.

Online auction sites are another good option and you will find a big range of classic cars sitting alongside more standard private vehicles at any of the main portals. Prices vary greatly here and the nature of the sites involved means that you have to be very disciplined in your bidding.

Set yourself a limit that you are prepared to pay and don`t be tempted to exceed it, no matter how attractive the vehicle may be. There are still many places to look for that perfect classic car.

Car auctions exist in the real world too and an internet search will gives you a list of those that are dedicated to classic car sales. This is where you should be prepared to travel in order to get the vehicle you truly want.

Alternatively, you could head to a general auction in your local area. You will find a limited range of classic cars over the course of the calendar year but if you are lucky enough to track one down, you may find a very good deal.

Looking for a classic alongside standard car sales is time consuming and it can be frustrating but the benefit should be found in the final price. Essentially, what you`re hoping for is a vendor who is either looking for a quick sale or is unaware of the car`s true worth and as such, your efforts could see you land a true bargain.

If it`s a sale or auction dedicated to classic cars however, a good option is to head to one of the many shows across the country such as the Festival of Speed in Goodwood, Sussex.

Every year there are auctions and sales at classic car shows and rallies and the expert view suggests that prices are very favourable as far as the seller is concerned.

Overall, it pays to work a little harder to get the classic vehicle that you really want but with some effort and dedication, there are many options open to you that will help you pick up the right car.

Keep checking the trade press and follow regular updates on Netcars.com blogs and you can secure the true classic you`ve always yearned for.

Car transport companies are usually listed under the following titles: car transport, vehicle shipping, and auto transport. When hiring a car transport company you have to consider some issues specific to vehicle transport, unlike your other possessions cars have some precise requirements like additional car insurance and vehicle inspection reports.

Be confident that the car transport company adequately insures your car. When investigating car transport companies you will want to find out the total cost first. Be prepared to provide the following information: origination/destination, departure date, and type of car. You will also want to consider what kind of car transport service you want. There are several options available with a wide variety of prices; for example door-to-door car transport, terminal-to-terminal, enclosed car transport, car carrier transport and rail service.

Some car transport companies may require payment in advance, while others will require a deposit. Tips for storing a classic car.

First and foremost, imagine you are getting your Classic Car ready for a show. Preparation will avoid many a sore head when you take the car back out of storage.

  • Ensure that the boot is clean and dry, The boot seal is rarely perfect and some moisture can collect and condense in the inner wheel arches and floor. Air it out well for a day or so, then place a desiccant sac (you know the silicon gel packs you get in boxes with say, a power drill or a television) in here before closing it up.

  • Change the engine oil. Dirty oil is contaminated with acids and water that can cause premature bearing failure and rust inside the engine.

  • Make sure the Brake and Clutch master cylinders are full of brake fluid. Brake fluid can absorb water very quickly. By reducing the exposed surface area of the fluid, the water absorption can be reduced. If you can, bleed the brake and clutch systems.

Tips to avoid Auction Scams

Scammers only need to get ONE person each week anywhere in the world taking up their scam to make a very lucrative business for them.

Scams are all to frequent on the Internet these days, whether it is from an auction site such as ebay or an email sent to someone advertising a classic car for sale anywhere else. But there are ways of avoiding these scams whether you are buying or selling a classic car online.

Some of the most obvious things in emails are very very bad grammar and/or spelling. Most Nigerian email scams look as if they have been run through a language translation website "goog day to you I bring you good news, of intrest to me is your most excelent vehicle which was seen for advertised on the internet at your most wunderful website" is an example of one email I received.

Beware of any sellers that offer to ship the car to you and if you don't like it just send it back! Or the ones who offer to ship it for free. And never, ever give your address to someone who says they will deliver the car to your door for a nominal fee of something ridiculous like £1.

A few points to remember:
The chances are good you are being scammed when ..
