BITTER AUTOMOBILE
Erich Bitter was a racing driver who owned the accessory company
Rallye Bitter and imported imported Intermeccanica and Abarths to Germany.
In 1971 he founded Bitter Automobile in his home town of Schwelm, and showed
his first car, the CD, in 1973. The company almost went bankrupt in 1986,
but continue today having built and shown three prototypes - Type 3, TASCO,.and
Berlina.
BITTER CD 1973-9
The CD was built on an Opel Diplomat floorpan, shortened and stiffened.
The engine was GM's smallblock 5354cc V8. 390 were built, all Ihd and automatic.
Body construction, trimming and assembly was by Baur. Most are still on
the road. Four in the UK. Performance O-60mph 9.6secs, 130mph, overall
mpg 16 Value in Condition 1 £9-12,000 (gbp)
BITTER SC 1981-6
The SC used the Opel Senator's floorpan and running gear. 1981-4,
cars were fitted with the Senator's 180bhp engine, late '84-86 cars adopted
a 2l0bhp, 3.9 litre version with 50% more torque. 450 were built, 25 of
them cabriolets, and 5 four doors. 28 in the U.K., 24 are 3.9's including
2 cabrios. All RHD except one cabrio.
Performance 3 litre man O-60mph 8.5secs, 131mph, overall mpg 21. 3.9 man
O.-60mph 7.5 sees, 142mph, overall mpg 20. Value in Condition 1 £9-13,000
(gbp)
THE CLUB
Founded in 1988, it has 30 members including some on the Continent
& N. America. 'Best Bitter', a 28 to 36 page magazine, is published
every two months covering a wide range of topics. Technical Secretary keeps
a good range of SC parts. Club has annual weekend rally, this year in New
Forest 19-21 September, plus exhibits at International Classic Cars Show
at NEC Birmingham, and Bromley Pageant of Motoring. Membership - UK £22
(gbp), Continent £25(gbp), N. America £28(gbp).
BOOK
'Bitter, The Cars' is the only one on the marque. 100 pages with
163 b&w and 5 colour pictures and four road tests, it costs £12.95
plus p&p £2 UK (gbp), £4 Continent, £6 N America
(gbp).
